\ ELettrix Formatting CommandsF
Besides using your word-processor's normal commands, you can insert LETTRIX
commands anywhere in your text to control special LETTRIX features. For
example: \Iitalic on \iitalic off. For more info about a command, press its
key! Several commands are handled by each screen in this demonstration.

N EAlign NumbersF
This is a very special purpose command that only effects LETTRIX when
justification is off. It causes LETTRIX to monospace numbers whether
proportional spacing is on or not. For example a column of numbers:
\j (justification off)
\n (number alignment off)
$1,000,000
$9,111,111
$2,888
\N (number alignment ON)
$1,000,000
$9,111,111
$2,888
LETTRIX starts with Number alignment ON.
= ETurn off commandsF
If you place the \Q Quiet command anywhere in your text, LETTRIX will no
longer be affected by \ commands. You'll want to place this command at the
start of program listings or set it manually in the LETTRIX menu before
printing program listings or directory listings containing the \ character.
HBIUE EA Lettrix ExampleF
You can use your word-processor's built-in commands for underlining, italics,
boldfacing, subscripts, and superscripts. Or, you can use LETTRIX commands:
\Bboldface\b, \Uunderline\u, \Iitalic\i, \Wwide\w, \Hhigh, \Wwide & high.\w\h
\1This is the first typeface. \2This is the second. \3This is the third.
\1
Lettrix commands consist of a \ followed by a single letter or number.
Upper-case letters turn something ON, lower-case letters turn something OFF.
To preserve alignment of columns, turn off line justification with j:
\j
Item Price Sales Revenue
Apple $0.10 $100 $10.00
\J(justification on)
If your software tries to print graphics such as pie or bar charts, LETTRIX
will shut itself off. To turn LETTRIX on again, just press right shift ─┘.

O ESo you have an OKIDATA...F
Any OKIDATA printer used with LETTRIX must have the OKIDATA EPlug & PlayF
option installed inside it.
EPlug & PlayF is a chip that allows an OKIDATA to imitate most of the functions
of the IBM graphics printer, including graphics and special IBM characters.
If you are buying a new Okidata, you can have Plug & Play installed at the
factory at no additional charge. If you already have an Okidata, you can
order Plug and Play by calling Okidata at 1-800-OKIDATA (1-609-235-2600 in New
Jersey). Ask for the Logistics Department and order by giving one of the
product numbers below:
\j
Printer Model Plug & Play Model # Price
----------------------------------------------------------
84 7000-1701 $89.95
92 7000-1801 $49.95
93 7000-1901 $49.95
Plug & Play comes with complete instructions for easy installation.
The Okidata 82 and 83 printers may not be used with LETTRIX.
X ESpecial Notes for XyWrite UsersF
LETTRIX will not be able to recognize the right-shift ─┘ command while
you are using XyWrite. Instead, you should exit to DOS using the XyWrite Do
or Quit command, press right-shift ─┘, then return to XyWrite.
For XyWrite PLUS to work with LETTRIX properly, you must use the modified
version of EPSON.PRN enclosed on your LETTRIX diskette.
M ESpecial Notes for Microsoft Word UsersF
\Q
You must load the MOUSE driver after LX (the LETTRIX driver) in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
You must also use the modified .PRD files contained in the \MSTOOLS directory
on the LETTRIX diskette. To copy them to your working Word disk, place the
LETTRIX diskette in A: and type
COPY A:\MSTOOLS B:\MSTOOLS
where B: is the drive containing your working Word disk.
$ EBuying LETTRIXF

PJ>/ EJustification, Proportional Spacing, and IndentingF
Our word-processor created a flush right-hand margin in this
paragraph by adding extra spaces between words. LETTRIX will
space all the letters proportionately, then add extra space
between words and letters to preserve the length of each line.
\j
With LETTRIX justification off, each line is free to assume
its actual length caused by the actual width of each letter.
\J
You must turn off justification, either in the LETTRIX menu
or in your text, for all tabs and columns to line-up properly:
\j
Item Price Sales Revenue
Apple $0.10 $100 $10.00
\J
If you want to maintain a flush right margin, you can
1) \>Use the > command to indicate the start of a new tab.
\T5
2) Use the T command to tell LETTRIX to recognize a number
of consecutive spaces, here five, as a tab. Six is the
initial setting of T.
#W- ELetter Spacing and Wide CharactersF
You can change the number of letters-per-inch printed by LETTRIX by inserting
the # command into your text. For example:
\#12
This is twelve characters/inch, commonly called "elite" pitch.
\#14
The PRESTIGE and FOLIO typefaces look good at fourteen characters per inch.
Others look cramped.
\#10
Here we are at ten characters/inch, the initial LETTRIX
setting. \WWide words will not change the margin,\w when
proportionally spacing, so you should insert extra spaces
after \Wwide words\w\---- with the dash command to leave space.
We like to set a margin of zero in our word-processor and let LETTRIX add the
left margin itself with the M command.
\M8\#12
Now we have an additional left margin of 8/12" even though we have used the
entire 80 character line for 12-pitch text.
JUSTIFICATION MUST ALWAYS BE ON FOR TEXT TO CENTER PROPERLY
" ELine SpacingF
You can change the number of lines-per-inch printed by LETTRIX by
inserting the " command into your text. For example:
\"8
This is eight lines-per-inch. Some typewriters have this
setting, especially those that print in "elite" pitch.
\"6
This is six lines-pre-inch. It is the initial LETTRIX setting.
LETTRIX can vary linespacing from 1 to 12 lines/inch.
You should set your word-processor to advance pages using
form-feeds (FF) to insure proper page alignment if you change
lines-per-inch inside a document.
SFC ESubscripting and Superscripting with LETTRIXF
If your software produces subscripts and superscripts by
half-linefeeding, as does WordStar and Multimate, they will not
line-up properly when LETTRIX proportional spacing is on. You
can use the LETTRIX "S" and "F" backslash commands instead for
sub and superscripting with proportional spacing.
Here is a superscript, often used to indicate a Footnote:\F1\f.
Here is a subscript:\S2\s.
ECompressed CharactersF
When your software compresses text, or you use the LETTRIX "C"
command, the LETTRIX margin is cut in half. For example:
\C
This text is compressed. Even though it is a full eighty
characters wide, this text measures only four inches across
instead of the normal eight.
\c
Here we are back with normal text. Note that if you imbed a
Compress command in the middle of a line, \Clike this\c, it
will throw off the right margin.
' EInitial CommandsF
\j\Q
You can start LETTRIX printing in a given format by entering commands after the
LX command preceded by an ':
LX COURIER BANKER '\p\2
The above example loads LETTRIX with proportional printing OFF and the second
typeface selected, in this case, BANKER.
You can also change the character that LETTRIX uses to indicate commands from
the \ character to another one by specifying it directly after the ' character:
LX COURIER BANKER '&p&2
The above command is identical to the preceding one with the exception that
the LETTRIX command character has been changed from \ to &. If we had just
wanted to change the command from \ to &, we could have typed:
LX COURIER BANKER '&
D EDesigning Typefaces with LXDESIGNF
With a backup copy of LETTRIX in the current drive, type the command
for your printer:
\p
IBM, OKIDATA, Epson RX/FX,
Gemini/Delta XPC................ LXDESIGN (uses *.LXH typeface files)
Epson MX, Riteman............... LXDESIGN/M (uses *.LXM typeface files)
Gemini, Delta................... LXDESIGN/S (uses *.LXM typeface files)
Gemini X, Delta X............... LXDESIGN/X (uses *.LXH typeface files)
C.Itoh 8510 EP.................. LXDESIGN/C (uses *.LXH typeface files)
followed by an existing or new typeface name. For instance: LXDESIGN/M NEWFACE
The LXDESIGN menu will appear, and after a few seconds, the first character of
the typeface will appear in the character design box. You can use the keys
detailed in the right-hand half of the screen to edit the typeface. Start by
pressing the + and - keys to move through the typeface.
Typefaces can be copied and renamed just like files, because they are files!
Just remember which family of files your printer uses, as indicated to the
right of the LXDESIGN commands above.
